PLACE CALLED CAMPUS I

Fountain of Knowledge: UON

Welcome to THE University

Days seemed to run
Months couldn’t pause to busk
They flew in furious haste
Never hesitating to rest.
Finally, the sun got up from slumber
I was in the island of elites…literatis
To lay the foundation for my future
THE university!

Welcome to THE university
The world class university
They derive pleasure in an article ‘the’
You could get stoned forgetting it
They took pride in honorary status
Being something in Limpopo
And another thing south of Sahara!

Welcome to THE university
Where village primitivity is halted
Where ladies do not wear clothes
They sensor significant details!
Where boys have thighs on the arms
The effect of lifting weights
Where big balls and small balls
Refer to no masculine anatomy assets
But powerful political rivalry

Welcome to THE university
Where ‘exile’ is a celebrated culture
Without having your life threatened.
Where elections are free and fair
And far from fair yet free.
Where we never cook but prepare meals
And only we know the difference.

Yes, I was there
Ready to learn, that ‘soup’
Had nothing to do with stews.
Ready to be called ‘Idiot’ by professors.
Ready to learn new wild cultures
Of ‘mwakenya’ and ‘ponyoka na fresha’
Ready to learn that ‘kuoga’
Had nothing to do with soap and water.
All in all,
I was there, at THE university
Ready to take on what was to come

To make myself a better man.
